“I spent all morning taking out a comma and all afternoon putting it back in again.” — Oscar Wilde

Sometimes, I feel jealous of poets. Like Wilde, poets get to spend hours poring over each sentence they write, querying every word, questioning every punctuation mark, polishing it until it shines.

If you’re anything like me (hi, I’m a full-time B2B content writer), you spend most of your days typing furiously as you try to hit the day’s word count. Oh how nice it would be to spend a Monday thinking about one comma. But when you’re on the clock, you have to move on to the next sentence as fast as your fingers will take you.

And yet, it’s worth remembering that all writers have one essential duty: to create great sentences. That’s true whether you’re a poet or a novelist, whether you’re creating ad copy or writing a lengthy white paper.
